Boat Crew

Boat Crew Shore Crew Tractor Drivers

The lifeboat is crewed by a team of 4 when it puts to sea.  The helmsman drives the boat and is in command of all aspects of its operation.  Behind the helm sits the navigator, who assists the helm in reaching the casualty location, and is also responsible for maintaining the often busy radio communications with the Boathouse, Coastguard teams, Helicopter, other Lifeboats, and the casualty. The remaining 2 crew assist in the rescue as directed by the Helm undertaking a wide range of tasks from swimming ashore to administer emergency First Aid, to anchoring the lifeboat and rigging tows to stricken vessels.

I met Phil Shepperd in hospital whilst our respective wives were in labour! He later mentioned the Lifeboat, an ambition I have carried with me since my teenage days on the North coast of Ireland as a dedicated surfer. Thankfully I have never needed the services of a lifeboat, but then you never know when you might! I wanted to give something back and I thank my wife Lisa and our 3 young kids, Corey, D'Arcy and Orla for allowing me. Love Sidmouth and love being in, on, or under the sea whenever I can.

I moved to Sidmouth from Yorkshire with my wife Jo in early 2005. One of our main objectives when we moved here was to get involved with the community. I saw an advert in the Sidmouth Herald requesting volunteers to help with manning the lifeboat shop and decided to pop down and see what it was all about. Having chatted to a few of the volunteers I was persuaded to train as boat crew instead! - I have 1 son, 1 dog, 1 cat and 3 ducks!

I spend my working days/nights traveling around Devon/Dorset/Somerset attending a variety of emergency incidents.  I joined the crew in late 2006 and enjoy my time here.  Any spare time I have is either spent studying, cycling and spending time with my daughter and my girlfriend.

(East Devon District Council)

I joined the crew in October 2009.
I moved to Devon in August 2009 for a job, the sea and the countryside. I work as a Waste Management Officer for East Devon District Council and part of the team running the refuse and recycling service across East Devon. I first visited the lifeboat station when delivering a recycling box and I walked out with an application form to join the crew! I love the training and getting involved whether at sea or in the boathouse. There's always something going on, always something new to learn and it's fun to hang out with a great group of guys.
When I'm not working I like to travel when I can, enjoy biking, walking and pottering in my garden.

I am a Sidmouth local through and through and have called it home all my life. I have grown up in the sea with surfing being my main passion. I have traveled extensively chasing waves and am very confident in the water.  I have spent many years working in and around the world of water sports and water safety from teaching surfing and working as a beach lifeguard in the uk and Australia. I have experience in sailing and boats from college and work. I am currently working in shiver, a water sports and outdoor shop in Sidmouth. We also supply rescue equipment to a huge variety of people from London fire brigade to Bear Grylls.

I have recently been working with Rig systems who are specialists in technical rescue and the London fire brigade and have been trained as a swift water and flood rescue technician.

I have recently finished my A-levels, and currently working for a local landscape gardener. I spend as much time as I can surfing, fishing, biking and running! I love the sea and I am looking to extend this by studying Ocean Science at Plymouth University.
