Callout #5
Sidmouth Independent Lifeboat was tasked following concerns for the welfare of a swimmer who had been seen clinging to a buoy off the coast in front of the Elizabeth Hotel. The lifeboat was tasked to investigate the situation and ensure the swimmer’s safety.
Sidmouth 2 was launched and quickly made its way to the reported location, where the swimmer was successfully located.
Fortunately, the incident turned out to be less serious than initially feared. The swimmer explained that they had been briefly seasick but was otherwise safe and well. Reassuring the crew that no assistance was required, the swimmer expressed their wish to continue with their swim.
While no rescue was ultimately required, the incident serves as a reminder that members of the public should never hesitate to raise the alarm if they believe someone may be in danger at sea. On this occasion, it was a false alarm with good intent – and exactly the kind of call crews would always rather attend than risk leaving a genuine emergency unchecked. Many thanks to all involved.
If you see someone in trouble along the coast, always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
