Callout #6
Sidmouth Independent Lifeboat was tasked by Solent Coastguard following reports of a missing kayaker between Branscombe and Beer.
Two kayakers had been paddling from Branscombe to Beer and were on the return leg of their journey when they became separated. Unable to locate their companion, one of the kayakers raised the alarm.
Sidmouth Lifeboat was launched, while Beer Coastguard Rescue Team attended Branscombe Beach.
The missing kayaker was located by the lifeboat crew near Beer Head, safely taken on board, and returned to Branscombe Beach, where they were reunited with the second kayaker.
Thankfully, the casualty was safe and well.
The lifeboat was recovered and returned to service at 15:05.
This incident is a timely reminder that conditions at sea can change quickly. If you’re planning to paddle along the coast, always wear a buoyancy aid, carry a means of calling for help in a waterproof pouch, check weather conditions before you go and stay within your capabilities.
Our thanks go to Beer Coastguard Rescue Team and HM Coastguard for their assistance.
