Multi-agency rescue of two casualties stuck on rocks

Date: 20.07.25

Time tasked: 16:52

Callout #: 8

Sidmouth Independent Lifeboat were tasked by Solent Coastguard to assist two casualties stranded on rocks.

Upon arrival, Sidmouth Lifeboat joined Beer Coastguard, who were already on scene attempting to get a rope across to the casualties to deliver blankets. Due to the rough sea conditions, reaching the casualties either by foot or from the water was not possible.

Sidmouth Independent Lifeboat prepared a sled for potential casualty extraction and stood by. At the request of Beer Coastguard, the lifeboat collected two members of the Coastguard Rescue Team from the beach. A crew member from Sidmouth Lifeboat went ashore using the sled and returned with the two Coastguard personnel.

The lifeboat then rigged for a veering-down maneuver and remained on standby, ready to respond immediately should either casualty enter the water. However, it was assessed that a helicopter extraction would be the safest option given the conditions.

Rescue 924, which had been dispatched from Newquay, then successfully winched both casualties from the rocks to the beach. Once safely ashore, they were assessed by Beer Coastguard, with no serious injuries reported.

Sidmouth Independent Lifeboat then returned the Coastguard team to the beach and headed back to station.

Many thanks to all involved — a timely reminder to always check tide times before heading to the coast.
